The First e-Impression – why it is different and why it matters

May 5, 2008 · 5 Comments

If you blow your first impression in person, often you know.  It is rare that a bad impression in the physical realm is missed by either party.  Visual cues, emotive reactions, simple actions – all combine to tell us if we’ve hit a home run, are on base, or in route back to dugout after a strikeout.  A negative first impression is a tough thing to overcome, but it can be done.

However, online, you get no such help.  Someone can search for you online at 3 in the morning while you are sleeping.  That person could be your potential next boss, the appointment you set for the next morning, the potential client tracking down a referral – or any other number of people seeking a first e-Impression of you – or how you appear online.

To take control of your brand online, be aware of what sites like PeopleFinders.com, Feedster.com and Technorati.com (blog search), Opensecrets.org, Classmates, Friendster and of course the power players, MySpace and Facebook, say about you.  Know what things have been picked up – and who shares your name.  Be sure you know what someone else may know, may think they know, or may have found and used to answer questions they aren’t socially or legally allowed to ask.

So, do you have what it takes to make a positive, or even stunning, first impression?  Do you give good Google?  Learn more about how you can increase your personal standing online, and take a spot on page one of Google and Yahoo.  Be found – and not found wanting – when someone looks to find their first e-Impression of you.  Make sure your virtual fly is up, your cyber teeth are brushed and your best web-wear is sported.
